"She caught her own reflection in the mirror. The mirror magnified the glow of seven candles placed around her bedroom, making the room seem doubly bright, despite a thin fog and musky odor of incense wafting through the room.
She sat on her bed, book open on her lap. Hours had passed since she had begun reciting the words of consecration out loud. 'Sit verbum factum hoc decreto. Ut dictum est, sic statim fiat … Procul, o procul, este profani.'"

"She looked at him sitting on the floor in front of a bookcase with his back turned. She couldn’t tell what he was doing, but she heard whispering. She heard an emphatic 's' here and a 't' there. It seemed he was reading aloud.
She was overwhelmed by a feeling of dread at hearing his whispers to no one in the room’s silence. She tried to calm down by telling herself that her imagination is running away with her."
